FORT MEADE – Mr. Bill Maxey, 88, passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Auburndale, FL. Mr. Maxey was born July 29, 1932 in Chicago, IL, and was raised from a young boy in the Soldiers and Sailor’s foster home, and later raised by two foster parents who gave him a loving home. He graduated from Casey, IL High School class of 1951, and spent a long thirty-five and a half year tenure as a tool grinder with Caterpillar, Inc. Mr. Maxey loved music and entertaining, and he had an extraordinary singing voice that allowed him to capture the attention of most any crowd, and perform at many venues across the country. He won the third place award in the Morris B. Sachs music contest and appeared on the Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour television program. Following his retirement from Caterpillar, he loved to travel with his wife, visiting many states and foreign countries. Mr. Maxey also had a strong faith in God, and was a member of the New Life Baptist Church of Fort Meade, and most recently attended First United Methodist Church of Fort Meade.
He was preceded in death by his birth parents, Robert and Katherine Moore Maxey; foster parents, Clyde and Viva Murphy; daughters, Diana Maxey and Kathy Haldorson; brothers and sisters, Daniel, James, Charles, Donald, Doris and Carolyn.
Mr. Maxey is survived by his loving wife of nearly 67 years, Sharleen Maxey, Fort Meade, FL; sons, David Maxey, Meadeview, AR, Michael Maxey and wife Tracey, Minooka, IL; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A drive-by acknowledgement procession will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021 beginning at the Oak View Lakes Club House, 300 S. Washington Ave., Fort Meade, FL and proceeding by the Maxey home where friends may express their condolences to the family from a social distance.
