FORT MEADE - Mrs. Dorothy W. "Dot" Blackburn, 100, passed away at her home in Coconut Creek, FL on Monday, June 6, 2022. Mrs. Blackburn was born February 4, 1922 in Carroll County, GA, and moved from Brewster, FL to Fort Meade in 1960, where she was a homemaker, member of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Meade, a member of the Fort Meade Garden Club, and a member of the Fort Meade Historical Society & Museum. She moved to Palm Beach Gardens, FL in 2004 and recently in 2019 moved to Coconut Creek, FL near Pompano Beach to be closer to her children. Mrs. Blackburn was a very patriotic southern lady, as she was a veteran of the United States Navy. She served during WW II as a Postal Clerk in the U.S. Navy Women's WAVES, which was an acronym for Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, and received and honorable discharge on July 30, 1945.
Mrs. Blackburn was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Dennis Wilson and Ida Elizabeth Williams Wilson; eleven brothers and sisters; and her husband Joseph Lester Blackburn.
She is survived by her sons, Wayne Wilson Blackburn and wife Judith, Pompano Beach, FL and Keith Lamar Blackburn, Oakland Park, FL; grandchildren, Matthew Blackburn, Sarah Blackburn and Jared Blackburn.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 10, 2022 from the graveside in Bowling Green Cemetery, Bowling Green, FL. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Blackburn requested that donations be made in her memory to her church, which was an important part of her life.
