She was a past member of the Woman’s Club of Lakeland, the Tuesday Music Club of Lakeland, and the Sorosis Club of Lakeland. Janet was a gifted soloist and provided music for many weddings and other social events in and around Polk County, and she sang on WBAR radio station in Bartow for a period of time. In 1979, Janet married Charles D. Straughn, Sr. and moved to Marathon, FL to develop property with her husband. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Marathon from 1979 through 1994 where she was an active member of the church choir and other special music events of the church. After returning to Lakeland she became a member of Scott Lake Baptist Church and served on the social committee. Janet enjoyed being a homemaker, wife and mother of her only child, Chuck Straughn, Jr. She said her role as “mom” gave her the greatest joy in her life. Many times she could be heard saying “I always knew that God loved me, but I never knew how much until He blessed me with my son, Chuck, and grandchildren.” Janet wanted to be remembered as a peacemaker in this troubled world, and as a person with great compassion for others.
