FORT MEADE - Mr. John Wiley McKinnon, Jr., 78, passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2020 in Bartow, FL. Mr. McKinnon was born June 9, 1942 in Chicago, IL and came to Fort Meade in 2003 from Grand Rapids, MI as a winter visitor, and later became a vital part of the community when he began his full time residence here in 2014. He was a 1960 graduate of Northwestern Military and Naval Academy, and attended the University of Miami before going on to retire after a 30 year tenure as a Switching Systems Technician with Michigan Bell Telephone Co. Mr. McKinnon was a U.S. Air Force Korean War veteran, Quarter Master of the Fort Meade V.F.W., Vice-Commander of Fort Meade American Legion Post #23, former member of the Moose Lodge, and of the Protestant faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wylie McKinnon, Sr. and Isobelle Rodden McKinnon; and his sister, Bernice Christiano.
Mr. McKinnon is survived by his loving wife, Trudy McKinnon, Fort Meade, FL; sons, Mark McKinnon and his wife Melissa, Grand Rapids, MI, Matthew McKinnon and his wife Rebecca, Muskegon, MI; brother, James P. McKinnon of Tennessee; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday; November 1, 2020 in the chapel of Hancock Funeral Home, 945 E. Broadway, Fort Meade, FL, with military honors following the service. Inurnment will follow at a later date in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
