FORT MEADE - Mrs. June Peacock Shirley, 80, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in Bartow, FL.
Mrs. Shirley was born September 28,1935 in Brewster, FL and was a lifelong resident of Fort Meade. She was a teacher and guidance counselor for the Polk County School Board for 28 years in Fort Meade and Frostproof, and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Meade. Mrs. Shirley was a very active member of the Fort Meade Historical Society and Fort Meade Garden Club. She was a 1953 graduate of Fort Meade High School, attended the University of Florida and received her master's degree from the University of South Florida.
Mrs. Shirley was preceded in death by her father, V.C. "Pete" Peacock and her mother, Edith Blanche Hancock.
She is survived by her college sweetheart and husband of 57 years, Bob Shirley, Fort Meade, FL; son, Bobby Shirley, Branson, MO; daughter, Lisa Simoneau, Sarasota, FL; brother, Duane C. Peacock and wife Audrey, Bartow, FL; sister, Connie Jones and husband Rick, Brooksville, FL; grandson, Andrew Shirley, Hudson, FL; four nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Sunday, November 29, 2015 at Hancock Funeral Home, 945 E. Broadway, Fort Meade. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 30, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, 135 E. Broadway, Fort Meade with Rev. Jack Taylor, Rev. Doug Harrell and Rev. Marion Sortore officiating. Interment will be in Hancock Cemetery, Fort Meade. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the maintenance fund of Hancock Cemetery, 620 N. Polk Ave., Fort Meade, FL 33841. A special thank you from the family to the Bartow Center for their loving care and compassion.
