Mr. Larry Barwick

FORT MEADE – Mr. John Larry Barwick, Sr., 76, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2023, in Lakeland,
FL. Larry was born July 18, 1946, in Bartow, Florida, the third son of Mr. and Mrs. N.W. Barwick, and was
lifelong resident of Fort Meade, FL. Larry was a 1964 Fort Meade High School graduate, where he was an
accomplished basketball player. He worked in the phosphate industry in various positions from 1964-
1974. In the early 1970’s Larry entered the construction industry as an apprentice, and in 1975 he
became a licensed builder. Larry succeeded as a custom home building contractor for several decades,
and later began working with Polk County in the Housing Rehabilitation Department. Even after retiring
from the county, Larry continued his work in construction. He was an honorary member of the Fort
Meade High School FFA Chapter, the Fort Meade Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Meade. He was a member/owner of the Lake/Polk Hunt Club in Ocala, Florida, and, more recently, a Southwest Georgia Hunt Club member in Georgetown/Lumpkin, Georgia. Larry held a private pilot’s license and loved to fly. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan W. and Edith Whitehurst Barwick; brother, Donald W. Barwick; and his father-in-law, Dorman Jones.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 60 years, Marianne Jones Barwick; daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Mitchell; son, John Larry Barwick, Jr., and wife Andi; mother-in-law, Mrs. Norma G. Jones; brothers, J.N. “Jay” Barwick, Steven Barwick and wife Melody, Christopher Barwick and wife Esther; as well as seven grandchildren, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
