FORT MEADE - Mr. Marion Leland Lastinger, 92, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017 in Auburndale, FL. Mr. Lastinger was born in Brewster, FL on August 3, 1924, and lived in Fort Meade for many years after returning from a long residence in Ocala, FL. He worked with Swift and Co. and Mobil Chemical Co., and also retired from the Marion County School Board after 18 years, where he was an agriculture teacher. Mr. Lastinger graduated from Florida Southern College with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1954, and also went on to graduate from the University of Florida with a degree in citrus, and also received a masters degree from U.F. in Agriculture and Extension in 1978. After his retirement, Mr. Lastinger stayed active in the education of youths, and was a vocational advisor for the Future Farmers of America. He was a member of the Lions Club, a WW II U.S. Army veteran where he received a Bronze Star for his wartime service in Germany, and he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fort Meade.
Mr. Lastinger was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus Leland Lastinger and Lillie DeVane Lastinger, and his daughter, Pamela Jean Humphries.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Frances Bevis Lastinger, Fort Meade, FL; son, Dwight Lastinger and wife Shana, Fort Meade, FL; daughters, Merilee Clifton and husband Bill, Longwood, FL, Ruth Lastinger, Inverness, FL; sister, Sharon Weed, Jacksonville, FL; nine grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Hancock Funeral Home, 945 E. Broadway, Fort Meade. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017 from the graveside in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade with Rev. Joe Parrish officiating.
