FORT MEADE - Mrs. Melba Cannon Dodgen, 90, passed away Saturday, May 27, 2017 in Bartow, FL. Mrs. Dodgen was born April 23, 1927 in Cleo Springs, Ok, and was the daughter of Francis Henry Sacket and Irma Jewell Pierce Sacket. She had a love for helping people, and received her Bachelor of Nursing degree from Wesley Nursing College in Wichita, KS and went on to retire from Bartow Hospital, where she worked as a registered nurse on the south wing and obstetrics dept. for thirty years. Moving to Fort Meade in 1950, Mrs. Dodgen quickly found her church family, and became a very active member of Cornerstone Church of God in Fort Meade where she served on various church committees, worked in the children’s church, a member of the Prime Timer’s, and served as the church treasurer.
Mrs. Dodgen was preceded in death by her husbands, Mathew Jackson Cannon and Roy James Dodgen, Sr.
She is survived by her son, Phillip Lynn Cannon and fiancee Deborah, Fort Meade, FL; daughters, Sue C. Harris and husband Wayne, Fort Meade, FL, and Cheryl J. Lewis and husband Howard, Bushnell, FL; step-sons, Roy James Dodgen, Jr. and wife Linda, Middleburg, FL, Jack Dodgen and wife Elaine, Rockmart, GA; step-daughter, Patricia Evans, Greenville, GA; sisters, Ruth Miller, Stillwater, OK and Bonita Jean Garner, Cleo Springs, OK; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Hancock Funeral Home, 945 E. Broadway, Fort Meade. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Cornerstone Church of God, 10 S. Seminole Ave., Fort Meade. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fort Meade. Those wishing to make donations in memory of Mrs. Dodgen, may make those donations to the Cornerstone Church of God Building Fund or Missions Fund.
